Sweet ToothSweet Tooth by Ian McEwan is about a complex character, Serena, who is forced by her mother to study math at Cambridge when her real love is literature. She has a brief affair with an older man her final year at Cambridge and finds herself being groomed for the intelligence services. An intriguing story set in the middle of British politics in the early 1970’s, there are references made to writers such as Kingsley Amis, Angus Wilson, Edward Thomas, W. H. Auden, Arthur Miller, Bertrand Russell, Margaret Drabble, Iris Murdoch, Robert Lowell, T. S. Eliot et al. Martin Amis. With its own storyline, this novel is also a book about books. It is about deceit, betrayal, jealousy, innocence and ultimately forgiveness.
